A Day in Capri

Capri, Italy is the dream vacation destination that we’ve all been drooling over for years. The place where an unbelievably blue sea sparkles under an equally azure sky. The place where you endlessly indulge on the finest Italian cuisine. The place where you absorb the pure and natural beauty of a sweet island escape.

Since arriving in Italy I haven’t roamed far from Sorrento. That was until I took a day trip to the magical island of Capri. Here’s what I learned.

Capri by boat

The simple fact is you can’t “do” Capri without taking a boat tour. If its not already obvious that it will be a breathtaking tour, it’s also the perfect spot to take in a view of the Faraglioni – three rock stacks eroded by the relentless blue waves. Considered to be the most iconic rock formation in Capri. AKA a must see.

Capri by land

After the boat tour its time to get a lay of the land and finally set foot on the island. Don’t worry there is plenty to explore so you definitely won’t be short on things to do. As soon as you step off your boat you are introduced to the grand harbor. Capri’s harbor is lined with a great spread of dining options that are convenient but not what you want. What you want is at the top, trust me. Once at the top of the island, whether you go by foot, bus or bike you’ll eventually run into the famous town square of Capri called Piazza Umberto.

The famous Piazza Umberto square in Capri, Italy

The Piazza Umberto is considered the most famous square of the island of Capri, Italy. The square is located in the historic center of Capri. Originally, the Piazza was traditionally used as a marketplace for meats, vegetables and fruits from the island. It wasn’t until 1938 when the young islander, Raffaele Vuotto, placed a few tables outside his bar in the Piazzetta and from that moment on, the square became a fashionable meeting place for both locals and visitors alike.

Nowadays the Piazza is recognized as the social epicenter for the entire island. The iconic square is chalk full of quaint restaurants. Anything from a traditional caprese salad, to mouthwatering lemon gelato is at your disposal in the piazza.

A pro tip I highly recommend is to grab gelato to go after your meal. That way you can enjoy all the deliciousness as you stroll the small cobblestone streets. Aimlessly explore through all the eclectic shops and classy stores that Capri has to offer.

The bustling streets of Capri, Italy

While Capri is a gloriously famous tourist destination, at the end of the day it is a simple little island jammed packed with culture, beauty and so so much more. I feel like I only scrapped the surface of Capri from my one day of visiting. Now I know there is a lot left to learn about this little slice of paradise. I’ll save it for when I come back to Capri…

Il Sentiero degli Dei: Path of the Gods

My latest adventure was spent hiking through mountains of the Amalfi coast. Il Sentiero degli Dei or otherwise known as Path of the Gods, is a three-hour hike along the epic coastline. This exciting journey will lead you through historic towns, following along ancient mule routes and purveying some of the most remarkable panoramas you will come across in Italy while keeping you apart from the bustling hubbub of tourist attractions.

Whether your keen on hiking or not, the trail is very welcoming to all visitors. While not strenuous the hike does come into contact with a variety of terrains. Beside the path, you find caves and terraces dropping from the cliffs to the sea and deep valleys. You’ll scale some rocks and cross through dusty paths. All in all the Path of the Gods provides you with killer panoramic views of the Amalfi coast from all angles and heights.

If you want to get the chance to explore the great scenic countryside of the popular coast id highly recommend

La Cucina del Gusto: A taste of Italy

Much of what you discover in Italy, as far as cooking classes go, are the combination of small intimate classes that revolve around teaching you the process of creating traditional Italian dishes. In fact, cooking classes have seen a recent rise in popularity among both food and travel enthusiasts world wide, as they are becoming beloved cultural experiences for tourists.

Since it’s no secret that Italy is known for it’s divine cuisine, I decided to hit the streets of Sorrento, Italy to discover for myself the wonders of taking a cooking class in Italy.

I stopped by at La Cucina del Gusto. For over 21 years this family owned and operated cooking school located in Sorrento, Italy has been teaching great Italian cooking.

Owner and lead chef, Carmen, explained to me that the purpose of her cooking school, besides teaching, is to more importantly provide the opportunity to make new friends. She says the school helps create an atmosphere of a family. The guests work to prep, cook, bake and eat the food all together as one. They wine and dine all day while creating everlasting memories they will have to cherish forever.

Chef Carmen ensures her lessons are “designed to assist you to quickly and easily learn the secrets of various dishes, so that, once back home, you will be able to easily repeat the preparation of the dish to impress your own guests”.

So no matter your age, or skill of cooking Chef Carmen’s cooking classes are the perfect way to get an immersive and authentic Italian experience during your time in Italy.
